Today, my sister told me that she often has people approach her at school saying things like “I heard your sister is gay. That means you’re gay too.” Instead of rising to their instigating, she told me she calmly tells them, “That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. But even if it wasn’t…My sister’s also really smart and hard-working and nice, and she deserves respect.” When I told her that I don’t ever expect her to stick her neck out on my account, she said “I’ve always stuck up for you. I’m not going to stop.”
This is just a suggestion to anyone who has watched ignorance hurt someone and said nothing. Next time you encounter somebody acting like an ass and think it won’t make any difference if you keep quiet, ask yourself: Are you as brave as my baby sister?
